You can't have Scotland doing something different from the rest of Britain... I am beginning to see the defects in all this devolution stuff.

Britain is a great nation. A country where we can watch the most exciting sport - Wimbledon, the FA Cup, Test Cricket. Where you can listen to the best pop music - the Beatles, Blur, Oasis and Simply Red.

Few would disagree with the qualities that go towards that British identity, qualities of creativity built on tolerance, openness and adaptability, work and self-improvement, strong communities and families and fair play, rights and responsibilities and an outward-looking approach to the world that all flow from our unique island geography and history. If these values are what makes us British ... then devolution is a necessary part of keeping Britain together.

the last thing that we want is a resurgence of English nationalism. I am British, and proud to be British.

In respect of the Claim of Right and sovereignty of the Scottish people, what could be better than giving them the sovereign right to decide in a referendum whether they want a Scottish Parliament?

As I explained a million times at the time, sovereignty remains with the United Kingdom Parliament, of which both the hon. Gentleman and I are Members—in case he had not noticed.

Of course sovereignty does rest with the people, which is why we gave them the chance to vote in a referendum in Scotland, which personally I always thought was a good idea.

Sovereignty remains with me as an English MP and that is the way it will stay.

The Barnett Formula has its own inbuilt review in the sense that it narrows the gap over time.

If we want to keep the UK together, the Barnett Formula is a small price to pay for that, even though I understand why it causes concern in parts of England.
